Adolescent gynecologic services

Starting routine gynecologic care early is important to the health of young women. While there is no specific age when girls should see a gynecologist for the first time, it is recommended that the first gynecologist visit happens when any of the following happens:

  • A young woman turns 18.
  • A young woman becomes sexually active.
  • A young woman experiences unusual puberty symptoms, early or delayed puberty, or painful or irregular periods.

At Novant Health Southeast OB/GYN, our providers work to make first gynecologic visits as comfortable as possible. Parents or caregivers are encouraged to be involved in the appointment, however they will be asked to step outside for a portion of the exam to give the patient privacy.
